THRIVE - Dealing with self-sabotage.

We all do it…

but do we all address it as part of our strategy to boost our careers?

The act or habit of behaving in a way that interferes directly with one’s own goals, well-being, relationships, etc., as by comfort eating, procrastination, or lashing out at others.

What’s your version of self-sabotage?

We are all different, but I am pretty sure that we all now how we can so often get in our own way when it comes to bringing about success.

Many of my clients come to me because they have an issue with procrastination, some over-eat, some use drugs, drink too much or lash out at significant others or colleagues. All too often the focus is the behaviour and how that is getting in the way of enjoying life but the behaviour is the not actually the problem, it is the ‘Why’ behind the problem.

Solve the ‘Why’ and the behaviour changes.

If we are procrastinating, yes that causes problems, but many of my clients come to me because they haven’t explored why they procrastinate. Often when my clients get to grips with their why, then they can do something about it and then they start to gain control on how they want to interact with life rather than trip themselves up.

How do I stop self-sabotaging myself?

Actually the first step is simple and that is self-awareness. I don’t mean being aware of the behaviour (although that helps), I mean allowing yourself to connect with what the self-sabotaging behaviour is trying to achieve.

If you need to do a piece of work but are avoiding it, ask yourself why? Check in with what you are feeling or what you are thinking that is leading to that act of avoidance.

It is the same for any self-sabotaging behaviour, are you fearing something, or are you looking for stimulus because you are simply bored, are you avoiding having a conversation with someone because you feel that they are intimidating?

Whatever the causation, it is really helpful to identify what it is and then you have a great starting place for growth.

About John Hicks.

Since 2012, after a career in science and technology starting as a bench chemist then moving into sales and marketing and ultimately senior management, I decided to start my own company to help clients to see the truth in their abilities rather than fall for the deceitful thoughts that come with having a low self-esteem.

I realised that individuals at all levels of organisations can experience overwhelm, self-doubt and be de-railed by their automatic reactions to problems rather than have choice and control in bringing about the best outcomes.
