Hello, I am John Hicks, a Cambridgeshire based Therapeutic Counsellor.

Congratulations on taking the first step in addressing your emotional pain.

It can feel quite lonely when we feel that we cannot talk with someone about what is bothering us. I am so glad that you are considering partnering with a therapeutic counsellor to help you to address that pain.

Clients come to me to support them in building their sense of resilience when experiencing emotional challenges associated with:

  • Anxiety and stress,

  • Neurodiversity (specifically the emotional impact of Dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder).

  • Parenting.

  • Bereavement and loss.

  • Developing careers.

  • Poor self-esteem.

  • Depression.

  • Managing relationships.

Let me tell you a bit about me.

  • I started my counselling practise to provide my clients with the space to explore themselves better, gain perspective and have the choice in how they want to live their lives. Why? Well to cut a long story short, I have been in the client’s chair and I have shone a spotlight upon what I felt was holding me back and I know the transformational difference that counselling makes to one’s life.

  • In general terms I see my clients grow in confidence, reduce anxiety and feel empowered to unlock their potential. It all boils down to improving one’s own personal resilience when navigating life’s ups and downs.

  • I have lived in Cambridgeshire all my life and have worked as a scientist, a senior manager and as an activist for creating awareness around the emotional difficulties associated with being Neurodiverse. Everything I have done in my career has essentially been motivated by working collaboratively and respectfully with the aim of empowering others to address need and bring about the best outcomes.

I have been in private practise since 2021 and I work with young people and adults.

  • I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling, I am an accredited registrant of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society and I hold an Enhanced DBS.

FAQ’s about working with me.

  • This can vary depending upon which ‘level’ of service you are interested in. On the whole, most sessions last one hour.

Check out the My Services page for more information.

  • I would recommend that you meet on a weekly basis with me so that you build up momentum and give yourself the best opportunities for growth.

I can meet with you fortnightly but weekly seems to work the best with clients.

  • For my pricing of all my services please check out the My Services page on this website.

  • That is a difficult question to answer as every client has a different set of needs.

Some people meet with me for a few sessions and some can be with me for many months.

The number of sessions you take will be decided by you. I want you to get what you need and I won’t pressure you into having more sessions than you actually need.

  • I offer my clients three ways to meet for counselling:

    1. In person at my therapy room in Sawston, Cambridgeshire,

    2. Via an online platform such as Zoom or MS Teams,

    3. Over the telephone.

  • If you consider yourself to be Neurodiverse or have a diagnosis, I can help you to understand what that means for you and explore unlocking your potential. Often there are challenges with anxiety that can hold one back from demonstrating their strengths. This is a common theme that I work with neurodiverse clients on.

  • It doesn’t matter where you are based, I can work with you!

I can obviously provide counselling with clients in Cambridgeshire working with anxiety, depression, grief etc on a face to face basis but I have also worked with clients in the US, the Middle East, New Zealand and across Europe using Zoom and MS Teams.

If you would like to work with me please do not let distance be a problem. It is not a problem for me!

  • The short answer is yes!

Check out the Level One service that I provide that supports clients with lowering anxiety and increasing confidence.
